PMP and CAPM Certifications now accepted as a route to PRINCE2 Practitioner

From 1st July 2014, AXELOS, the joint venture company that has taken over responsibility for the PRINCE2 credential, will recognise the PMP and CAPM qualifications as acceptable alternatives to the PRINCE2 Foundation qualification.

Previously, passing the PRINCE2 Foundation qualification was a mandatory requirement for sitting the Practitioner level exam (although most people did both exams on the same day). From July AXELOS will recognise qualifications awarded to Practitioner candidates by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the International Project Management Association (IPMA).

The Foundation qualification is a relatively straightforward 75 question multi-choice exam with a 50% pass mark so whilst welcome, this concession by AXELOS does not in any way suggest equivalence between the qualifications.

  1. Thank you for the article and the information. I intend to take the Prince 2 exam in the near future; and already have CAPM and ITILv3 Foundation credentials. The fact that having the CAPM credential may waive the requirement for Prince2 Foundation; is it only in Australia or does it apply to candidates in the US as well? I ask since I am located in Miami, FL. Your insight would be much appreciated.

  2. This will be a great news for everyone who have already taken the PMP and CAPM qualifications. I know Saibu would be very happy that he is not required to take the PRINCE2 Foundation exam as he is already have the CAPM qualification.

I’m just wondering what would be the reasons behind AXELOS decision to start recognising PMP and CAPM as an alternative to PRINCE2 Foundation?

Anyway, this is a great move by AXELOS giving project management practitioners different alternatives in taking the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam.
