EVM – it’s not as hard as you think

Using Earned Value Management (EVM) to improve project governance and controls is not as hard as you think!  This just uploaded presentation from PC Expo MEL looks at establishing, operating, and running an EVMS, based on Australian Standard AS4817:2019 (the Australian adoption of ISO 21508), using simple tools.

Download the presentation from: https://mosaicprojects.com.au/PDF_Papers/P213_EVM_its_not_as_hard_as_you_think.pdf

It briefly covers:
– Understanding EVM, what it is, and what it is not
– Defining the key elements and objectives of EVM, and
– The creation, and use of EVM on a small bridge project.

Sydney Opera House – Finished at last.

Over the years, we have written about the project and its value to Sydney, Australia, and the world on numerous occasions some of the key publications are:

These blogs and papers identify three overriding issues:

  1. The project ran massively over time and over budget during construction.
  2. To save costs the project was taken over by a government committee which redesigned the interior. Politics and cost cutting resulted in a very disappointing interior.
  3. The building is an iconic success.

To rectify the internal shortcomings and revitalize the venue the NSW government committed to a $300 million, 10-year program of works in 2012. The improvements were to be carried out based on the venue’s Conservation Management Plan, to ensure the original design intent for the interiors created by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and completed by an Australian architectural team led by Peter Hall was respected.

The final major project in the NSW government’s ‘decade of renewal’ for the landmark, was the complete refurbishment of the concert hall. Following two and a half years of renovations (and $150 million), this venue opened on 20th July 2022.  All remaining works are expected to be completed ahead of the year of celebrations in 2023 to commemorate the buildings 50th anniversary.

One can only wonder how much could have been saved if Jørn Utzon had been allowed to complete the project in the 1970s without political interference.

The Evolution of Project Management – Final

Following publication of our initial thinking on the evolution of project management from earliest times to the present, a final paper has been uploaded to the Origins, and trends in, modern project management section of our website.

This paper identified two waves of development in the sophistication of the management of projects, the first from pre-history through to the Romans (Western Empire), the second from the dark ages, through to the present.  Project control tools seem to have had little effect on this evolution until the start of the 20th century.

Rethinking Change

The fifth and final paper in Dr. Lynda Bourne’s series: Project Management in the time of COVID has been published in the November edition of PM World Journal.  This paper outlines some practical ways to facilitate the changes proposed in the previous four papers in this series, and identifies some processes and actions that can be applied by organizations to assist with the transition to life post-COVID.

It is organized as follows:

  • First, a discussion of the importance of leadership, engagement of stakeholders, managing uncertainty, consultation, and communication, in facilitating change
  • Second a discussion on approaches for effective change management
  • Third a focus on how to identify and counteract recurring issues in implementing the change.
